Hello! It's been some time since I posted. I finally had my housewarming party! It was so nice to have people over to see all the work that's happened on the house. I'll post pictures of the decorating that I did (it was a Halloween party as well) because I was really proud of everything.
The Halloween party was my deadline for getting done what I knew I wanted to - and that ended with the kitchen, because I've run out of ideas for the other rooms and need a break. I really like my kitchen. It's small, and let's face it, it's not really the room I spend the MOST time in, but I still wanted to make it special. When I moved in, the previous owners took the fridge with them. I bought a new stainless steel top freezer refrigerator. I really wanted a bottom freezer fridge, but, my parents made the point that I could replace the older existing dishwasher with a new stainless steel one, and get a new top freezer fridge, for the same price as a bottom freezer fridge. Decision made! Here they are, both Frigidaire from Lowe's:

My house was built in the 60's, and some of the decorating in the kitchen showed that - most notably the large range hood over the stove. I have a drop-in oven, and it's on what I'll call the "peninsula" (not really an island as it's attached to one wall) and as soon as I saw the place/knew I was moving in, the range hood was the first thing I wanted out of there:
Gorgeous, isn't it?! It wasn't functional, as it would vent heat upwards and release it from a vent right below the ceiling, so it wasn't needed. My dad found an electrician to remove it. I made the decision to also have the main ceiling light removed (there is also a fan/light above the table area, to the left of this picture) because I wanted track lighting installed. That would be all the light I needed. My dad and I ended up at Denney Electric in Ambler, where we found all the supplies for the track/pendant lights. I liked working with them, but we did encounter some problems with items not being in stock. They were really helpful, though, with replacing/returning things and getting items in when they said they would. Here's what was done:

I was SO impressed when I first saw it. I think it opens up the kitchen and makes it look a lot more modern. The range hood was bulky while this seems light and airy. And I have yet to hit my head on these lights like I kept doing with the range hood! The electrician also installed a dimmer switch which has been great - the lights can get pretty bright (especially the small halogen spot lights) so it's nice to be able to use the dimmer. (I also need to point out the blinds on the window! They're perfect for the space. There were curtains there before. I'm not going to go that route right now, I'm going to leave the blinds there).
Now as for color...the kitchen, as you can see, was a simple, light tan. That's no good! I'm all about color! And I love, love, love green. It's my favorite color to paint in rooms. The living room in my apartment was painted a light sage green so I thought that would be a perfect idea for the kitchen. Enter apartmenttherapy.com and pinterest.com - they brought lime green into my life! I had to try it. What else I had to install...chair rail. As I've walked in my block, a lot of the houses in my section have chair rail in their kitchens, and it looked so pleasing. Thanks to my dad it was an extremely easy thing to do.
(pre-paint)
It really gives a nice, extra touch to the room and makes it look a little more polished.
Here is the final result:
I have to admit that I didn't like it AT ALL when I first saw it. My wonderful dad took an afternoon to paint while I was at work and I walked in and was really disappointed. The green was so...GREEN. But as the night went on, it really grew on me. I think it's really unique and it's turned out to be just what I wanted. The bottom part of the wall was also painted, even though the color is a bit similar to what was already there.
Here's another view:
The entire wall around the window/back door is green. It didn't make sense to do the chair rail in such a small spot.
My thought about the kitchen is that I hope people say "Wow, I wouldn't have though of that, but doesn't it look GREAT?!" rather than "Man, what was she thinking?!" I hope I accomplished that.
I'll update again soon with pictures of the Halloween decorations, the items I've used to decorate the kitchen normally, and my beautiful kitchen table!
